Rewiring, Remodels & ADUs

Remodel electrical work is easiest to manage when the circuits, device locations and future loads are planned before walls are closed. We can help with new circuits, altered wiring, lighting, receptacles and equipment connections as the space changes.

Plan the electrical before finishes go back on

A remodel is the right time to think about how the room will actually be used. Receptacle placement, lighting controls, dedicated appliance circuits, low-voltage cabling and future equipment are much easier to handle while framing or wall cavities are accessible.

A clear electrical plan also makes coordination with cabinets, plumbing, HVAC, drywall and finish work much easier. Moving a box a few inches before drywall can be simple; doing the same thing after cabinets and tile are installed can be much more involved.

Kitchen, bath and laundry remodels

These rooms often have more electrical requirements than a simple bedroom or living space because they combine receptacles, lighting, fixed appliances and equipment loads. A kitchen may need several dedicated appliance circuits, while bathrooms and laundry areas have their own receptacle and equipment needs.

The exact circuit count depends on the layout and equipment being installed. Appliance model numbers are useful early in the process because an induction range, electric dryer, dishwasher, disposal, microwave or specialty appliance can materially affect the plan.

Typical remodel electrical scope

  • New or relocated receptacles and switches
  • Lighting layouts and new control locations
  • Dedicated kitchen, laundry and equipment circuits
  • Bathroom fan, lighting and receptacle wiring
  • New subpanels or feeder work when the project requires it
  • Low-voltage, camera and network cabling before finishes are installed
  • Exterior circuits or equipment associated with the remodel

ADUs and additions need whole-project planning

An ADU or addition adds more than a few branch circuits. The service capacity, feeder arrangement, panel location, required equipment circuits, lighting, receptacles and future use of the space should be considered together.

If the project has architectural or electrical plans, they are a useful starting point. If it is a smaller owner-directed remodel, a room-by-room list with appliance information and marked-up photos can also define the scope clearly.

Older wiring and concealed conditions

Opening walls in an older property can reveal junctions, damaged cable, undersized boxes or wiring methods that were not visible during the original estimate. Those conditions should be documented and discussed before adding work beyond the planned scope.

A remodel is also an opportunity to correct obvious problems in areas that are already open instead of covering them back up. The practical approach is to separate known scope from concealed conditions so the customer understands what was included and what changed.

Permits, inspections and project sequencing

Permit and inspection requirements depend on the project and jurisdiction. When inspections are part of the job, rough electrical work normally needs to be completed and accessible before insulation and drywall cover it.

Good sequencing prevents rework: framing and major mechanical locations should be settled, electrical rough-in should be completed, required inspections should occur, and then finish devices and fixtures can be installed after the walls are complete.

Questions about rewiring, remodels & adus

These are common starting points. The exact answer can depend on the equipment, existing wiring and project location.

Can you work from plans?

Yes. Plans, marked-up photos or a room-by-room device list are all useful for defining remodel scope.

Can low-voltage wiring be added while walls are open?

Yes. Remodels are a good opportunity to plan network, camera and other low-voltage cabling before drywall is installed.

What if hidden wiring problems are found?

Concealed conditions can change the scope. The practical approach is to document what was discovered, explain the options and price added work separately before proceeding.
